Our vine is grown in the valley of the Rio Miño. Terraces always following the path of river, taking on all forms and arrangements imaginable. Cultivated areas range from the waters edge to what seems the very top of the hills.
The land rises steeply, it has been restructure using the “socalcos” (small containment walls), which resemble a stairway to heaven. Working the terraces is hard labour intensive work.
It is said that the Miño is the father of wine. |

The planting the new vines is carried out between March and May, because it can be still be cold enough to damage the plants before. Young plants start to bear fruits after 2-3 years. All plants, even the younger ones, are prepared in the following way; digging in March, tilling in June, and a second-tilling when required. This is really a simplification of the work involved in attending to the crop. We will tell you more on one of our guided tours.
Grapes are harvested mainly by women,
whist men carry the boxes of grapes on their backs to the nearest road. |
