The Sierra of O Courel is an “Espacio Natural Protegido” (Protected Area) and covers approximately 20,000 hectares. Many rivers, such as the source of the Rio Sil, tumble down from the high peaks forming scenic valleys. The highest peaks are Formigueiros (1643 m)and Paxaro Pia (1,610 m).
O Courel is one of the least populated areas of Galicia.

Devesa Nogueira is considered to be one of the forests in the Iberian Peninsula with the greatest biodiversity. Here you will find native tress such as Chestnuts, Oak, Yew, Birch, Holly, Broom etc. Then there are the animals, some rarer then others, Wolves, Foxes, Badgers, Martens, Roe Deer and in the air; Owls, Kites and Golden Eagles, plus several species of Harriers.
